How the numbers are made
Inputs. 18,413 Mapflow building footprints with heights. Only residential (2,072 apartment blocks) and housing (2,276 single-family houses) carry people. Area: city border plus buffer, 48.3 km². Total: 104,000 residents. In 3D, each building is extruded to its Mapflow height.
Volume model. Each building gets 104,000 × its share of total volume, where volume = footprint × height. That works out to 7.56 residents per 1,000 m³.
Households + volume. Each house holds one household of 2.5 people (5,690 in total). The remaining 98,310 residents are split across apartment blocks by volume.
Grid. H3 resolution 10 (average edge 75.9 m). A building that crosses cell edges is split by footprint share, so cell totals add up to exactly 104,000.
Reference check. Across 476 blocks in the housing registry, volume ranks apartment counts with Spearman ρ = 0.80. Floor area (height ÷ 3 m) does no better.
